3 NFC East moves that made Commanders feel better about 2023 chances

Commanders have nothing to fear with Tyron Smith
All signs pointed to Tyron Smith and the Dallas Cowboys going their separate ways this offseason. The veteran offensive tackle was a primary salary-cap casualty candidate thanks to the money owed in 2023 and his regressing performances, but some common ground was reached between all parties to ensure he’ll be around next season.
This raised a few eyebrows, to put it mildly. Smith’s age is catching up with him and health complications are increasing with every passing year, which is something that won’t go unnoticed by the Washington Commanders and their outstanding defensive front when the regular season arrives.
If Chase Young can stay on the field – which is a big if – then the Commanders front four is a match for anybody. Daron Payne is around long-term after getting a new deal this offseason, with Jonathan Allen and Montez Sweat also playing at a Pro Bowl level during the previous campaign.
Washington must take advantage of this foursome while they still can. Who knows what could happen with Sweat and Young this time next year with both seeking new deals, so maximizing the team’s biggest strength in 2023 is the best possible route to a playoff berth.
It’s going to take a collective effort. But whenever the Commanders are going against Smith, targeting the former All-Pro heavily to see how he holds up could be worth its weight in gold.
