What were some major observations from Eric Bieniemy’s eagerly awaited first presser since joining the Washington Commanders?

After the usual bedding-in period, Eric Bieniemy took to the podium for his much anticipated first press conference since joining the Washington Commanders as their new assistant head coach/offensive coordinator. The team pulled off a major coup by securing his services, which provides the respected mind with an opportunity to prove beyond all doubt he has what it takes for a top job.

There’s been a huge debate about Bieniemy’s switch to Washington. While he’s largely respected in league circles, many believe this to be a sideways step and one that might not guarantee him a head coaching gig somewhere down the line.

Despite what some may have speculated, this is a promotion in title and influence for Bieniemy. One that could be the final stepping stone and give Washington a real chance of challenging for the playoffs in 2023.

Without further ado, here are four major observations from Bieniemy’s first Commanders presser on Thursday.

Major Observation No. 1

Eric Bieniemy takes the high road

After some scathing remarks from LeSean McCoy about his chances with the Washington Commanders, Eric Bieniemy opted to take the high road rather than fire back at the former running back. Something that showed the coach’s dignity even with the spotlight glaring.

"“LeSean McCoy is a future Hall-of-Fame runner. OK? Everybody is entitled to their own comments and how they feel. When it’s all said and done with, I think that’s all I have to say because he’s entitled to his own opinion.”"

This was the right call for Bieniemy to make. After all, a plethora of his ex-players and coaches gave McCoy the roasting he deserved for such asinine comments.

Eric Bienemy on Commanders’ QB situation

Among the first tasks on Eric Bieniemy’s lengthy to-do list is assessing and forming a plan for the quarterback position. Carson Wentz will be released and Taylor Heinicke is looking for a new deal, which puts the focus firmly on Sam Howell as the team’s potential No. 1 option right now.

Ron Rivera has already stated that he expects Howell to be top of the depth chart at OTAs. Further reinforcements are going to arrive, but Bieniemy was nothing but complimentary of the North Carolina product – even if he is still in the early stages of analyzing his skills.

"“Well, I can only base my evaluation on what he did coming out of college. Now I did have an opportunity to see him play in that last game against the Dallas Cowboys. The kid is a dynamic football player. He can make throws from different platforms. You can tell he has a baseball background.”"

Howell could be the one who benefits most from Bieniemy’s arrival. The coach’s influence on Patrick Mahomes is unquestioned en route to two Super Bowls and NFL MVP awards, which is a track record few could match and something that can finally solve the Commanders’ complex complication under center.

The former fifth-round selection was among those in attendance for Bieniemy’s introductory press conference. Hopefully, this is the start of a fruitful relationship that will spearhead the Commanders back into the NFC East title picture.

Eric Bieniemy focusing on now with the Commanders

It was almost inevitable that questions would come up about Eric Bieniemy not being a head coach yet. The offensive guru has undertaken multiple interviews with teams without doing enough to secure what many believe to be a well-deserved promotion, which seems bizarre to many all things considered.

Bienemy will look to quash any remaining doubts about his credentials as a future head coach with the Washington Commanders. Despite his incredible success with the Kansas City Chiefs and sound reputation in league circles, the primary focus is to improve his new employers and let the chips fall where they may once the campaign concludes.

"“Right now I’m the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. Being a head coach, if that’s to happen it will take care of itself. Being a head coach, it hasn’t happened, it’s not anything that’s going to impact me moving forward because the only thing I need to be concerned with is what’s important today.”"

After so much rejection, Bieniemy is probably just taking everything in his stride. If it happens, great. If not, then he can relax safe in the knowledge Washington gives him the best opportunity to run his own offense and play a leading role in all aspects of the organization.

This is something he didn’t necessarily have in Kansas City with Andy Reid holding power. Whether it’s enough to persuade another franchise is another matter.

Why not the Commanders?

This was obviously a big head-scratcher to many. Why did Eric Bieniemy leave behind such a coveted position with the Kansas City Chiefs to join the Washington Commanders?

Bieniemy had a different outlook.

Why not the Commanders?

The assistant head coach/offensive coordinator outlined the talent at Washington’s skill positions as a factor behind his decision. Something that provides a solid foundation from which to build providing the Commanders figure out how to improve specific areas such as the offensive line before Week 1 rolls around.

"“Look at all the talent. I’m excited about this opportunity. I have no doubt about what they’re building here. I have never backed down from a challenge.”"

Bieniemy is ready to, as he put it, chop the wood. Before then, it’s a chance for the coach to evaluate and have his own big say on which players come into his creative offensive system.

This was a good first impression from Bieniemy. He was articulate, and passionate, laying out clearly what he wants from himself and his players throughout the preparation period in readiness for a potentially profitable campaign.

And make no mistake, Bieniemy will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of achieving his objectives.
