What unknown quantities remain for the Washington Commanders heading into an important 2023 offseason for the franchise?
Even though the Washington Commanders couldn’t secure a second-straight postseason berth, it was a respectable campaign overall. Especially considering the quarterback complications suffered by the team in the second campaign under Ron Rivera.
That is among Washington’s biggest priorities this offseason. They can clear a significant amount of cap space to attract free agents and boast eight 2023 NFL Draft selections to sure up other positions of need via the college level.
Things are hanging in the balance with the NFC East being more competitive than anyone imagined. But the scope for growth is evident if those in power put the necessary foundations in place this spring.
Looking ahead to what should be a fascinating few months, here are three unknown quantities surrounding the Commanders heading into the 2023 offseason.
Unknown Quantity No. 1

When will Dan Snyder sell the Commanders?
The first major domino that could fall is Dan Snyder finally selling the Washington Commanders. Speculation is mounting that something could be finalized after the Super Bowl, although nobody has yet met his whopping $7 billion asking price to buy the organization.
Whether it’s Jeff Bezos or someone else, Snyder’s grip loosening entirely represents a new era for Washington football. One that can finally get them out of the doldrums and into legitimate NFL contention.

Who will replace Scott Turner as Commanders OC?
Another key area that has some unknowns before the offseason is what exactly the Washington Commanders’ offense will look like in 2023. Scott Turner was fired after the campaign concluded, which came as no real surprise after another lackluster year that forced head coach Ron Rivera into a different approach.
Interviews have taken place with the likes of Anthony Lynn without an appointment coming to light. However, the landscape should become much clearer once the Super Bowl festivities are over.
The main target according to reports is Eric Biemiemy. Convincing the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator to leave a thriving franchise led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes is a tough sell, but giving the respected coach full control is something that might enhance his prospects of getting a head coaching gig down the line.
This hasn’t arrived for Bieniemy as yet. Whether that’s enough for a sideways move to another franchise is another matter.
In any case, the Commanders should have a contingency plan or two up their sleeve. Anything else has the scope to cause significant problems for Rivera in the third season under his leadership.
The sooner a new offensive coordinator is secured, the better. Because the Commanders call ill afford anything complicating matters with so much riding on the upcoming offseason period.

Commanders QB room
Ron Rivera’s recent statement about Sam Howell heading into OTAs atop the quarterback depth chart was encouraging for the player. However, the Washington Commanders will also seek additional reinforcements in pursuit of finally getting things right at football’s most important position.
Howell showed promise when finally tasked with starting duties in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. His poise, determination, and command of the offense were encouraging, but much will depend on what other quarterbacks become available in free agency, the 2023 NFL Draft, or even the trade market in the near future.
Carson Wentz will be released to save the Commanders more than $26 million. Although Taylor Heinicke might stick around, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Washington cut their losses despite some encouraging performances in 2022.
This is the biggest unknown when it comes to playing personnel. Do the Commanders give Howell a chance to showcase what he can do or could they be ready to make another bold move in an attempt to become more competitive next season?
In truth, nothing should be off the table right now. But it is vital influential figures within the franchise agree on their path and strike with conviction.
Otherwise, they could be NFC East also-rans once again in 2023.
