The Commanders seem content letting Darrick Forrest play through his growing pains. After a scintillating season debut vs Jacksonville, Forrest’s aggressive playing style got the best of him against Detroit as he was beat for a touchdown in coverage by Josh Reynolds and overshot his spot on multiple running plays.

Forrest’s emergence definitely lessens the need for a Collins reunion, but this version of Washington’s defense more run stuffers and Collins excels in that department, as evidenced by his 30 run stops and 82.2 run defense grade in 2021.

With Forrest holding his own in coverage, Collins could assume a full-time role near the line of scrimmage. It doesn’t take a football savant to realize that’s where he’s best-suited, but it’s ultimately up to Collins if he’s willing to shed his safety label and become a full-time linebacker.

Remember, he was reluctant to accept the position change last season. If he’s open to the idea now, we’d leave the door open for a reunion. He’s a leader (this defense could certainly use another veteran) and knows the system.

Doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.
