4 Commanders set for bigger roles after 2022 offseason
By Jerry Trotta
1. Jamin Davis
It’s befuddling the Commanders haven’t signed a veteran linebacker to play alongside Cole Holcomb. Between Alexander Johnson, Dont’a Hightower and Kwon Alexander, there are plenty of starter-caliber options still kicking in free agency.
It’s clear the coaching staff wants to give Jamin Davis every opportunity to build up his confidence after a disappointing rookie year that saw him moved from the signal caller in the middle of the defense to an off-ball role. Is that in the team’s best interest? Nobody knows, but the strategy clearly benefits Davis.
After all, the options behind Holcomb and the 2021 first-rounder leaves a lot to be desired. They include Khaleke Hudson, a fifth-round pick in 2020 who’s made 23 tackles over 74 defensive snaps in two seasons, journeyman David Mayo, who offers very little on passing downs and five undrafted rookies: Milo Eifler (2021), Drew White, Ferrod Gardner, Tre Walker and Bryce Notree.
Even if for just insurance purposes, we’d be stunned if the Commanders didn’t sign a veteran, but right now Davis is a big offseason winner. Between the draft and free agency, the front office passed on multiple chances to bolster the LB corps, so the Kentucky product is due for a massive uptick in snaps in 2022.
