1. Jamin Davis

The Commanders entered the draft with a glaring need at linebacker and they concluded the seven-round showcase with … a glaring need at linebacker. That’s right. Widely expected to use a second- or third-round pick on a linebacker, Washington didn’t use a single one of its eight selections on a LB.

That’s huge for Jamin Davis, who was clearly over-drafted with the No. 19 overall selection last year. Thrust into the middle linebacker role following Jon Bostic’s season-ending injury, Davis looked overwhelmed. The Kentucky product struggled filling gaps against the run and seemed unsure of himself in coverage.

Of course, not every rookie LB makes a seamless transition to the pros, but the Commanders (and their fans) expected more from the first-round pick than splash plays and flashing potential in an off-ball role down the stretch after the team was already eliminated from playoff contention.

Luckily for Davis, he enters his sophomore year as the likely starter as a weakside linebacker next to projected MIKE starter Cole Holcomb. And by lucky we mean extremely lucky, as Washington had its choice of Troy Andersen, Chad Muma, Christian Harris and Nakobe Dean, among others, in Rounds 2 and 3.
