3 toughest non-divisional games for Washington in 2022
By Jerry Trotta
1. Home vs Packers
Like the Colts, it’s unclear who the Packers’ starting quarterback is going to be for next season. Assuming Aaron Rodgers is back, though, Washington’s home clash against Green Bay (date to be determined) is without question the toughest non-divisional game on the 2022 schedule.
The bottom line is most of the Packers’ core is under contract for 2022. If they’re able to re-sign Davante Adams, who isn’t going anywhere if Rodgers stays, All-Pro linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and breakout cornerback Rasul Douglas, they’ll return most of their starters.
Even without Campbell and Douglas, this, at least on paper, is the best team in the NFC and they’ll be a handful for Washington. After all, Green Bay was seemingly in cruise control against the WFT back in Week 7 and they still won 24-10.
Slowing Rodgers down will obviously be key — maybe Ron Rivera can give 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris a call — but Washington did incredibly well against the run in this game, limiting Aaron Jones to 19 yards on six carries.
It’s also important to remember that Washington’s defense still hadn’t turned a corner at this point in the season. In the five previous games before Week 7, Jack Del Rio’s unit allowed an abominable 33.2 points per contest.
Bottom line? While there’s a path to an upset for Washington in this rematch, they’ll lose by multiple touchdowns again if their red zone efficiency doesn’t improve and their defense isn’t more organized.
