3. The door is still open for Kyle Allen.

Unless we were watching a different game, Taylor Heinicke did nothing to separate himself from Kyle Allen in the battle for the backup job.

While Heinicke made some nice plays with his legs, he was largely ineffective as a passer, finishing 11-of-13 for just 80 yards. That equates to a lousy 6.2 yards per completion, and that just isn’t going to cut it.

The Football Team’s backup QB job is still up for grabs.

It just looked like Heinicke was trying to do too much and it almost cost him early in the game when he fumbled during a scramble. Luckily for the 28-year-old, backup center Tyler Larsen pounced on it to save a turnover.

While Allen wasn’t anything special — he went 2-of-4 for 23 yards — it’s worth noting he led the Football Team’s only touchdown drive. That proved to be pretty important given WFT only won by four points.

Two completions is obviously too small of a sample size to say for certain that Allen will give Heinicke a run for his money. However, if Allen gets extended reps in the final preseason game, things could get very interesting.
