Washington Football Team Dud: K Dustin Hopkins

Dustin Hopkins has had a good season to date and he was a massive part of recent Washington wins. However, he didn’t have his best day for Washington and there was one major reason for it.

After Washington scored their first TD, Hopkins was called on to kick the extra point for the team. He missed the kick. Had he made it, the deficit would’ve been cut to 10. Instead, it was 11.

On the surface, one point may not look like much, and Washington could make it up the next time they scored, right? Well, they tried to. Washington got a touchdown and went for two. Unfortunately, the conversion failed and they found themselves down 20-15.

With time running out, that meant that Washington’s final offensive drive of the game would’ve had to end in a touchdown. As we all know, that didn’t happen as Haskins and Co. couldn’t quite get the job done. So, Washington ended the game losing by five.

That said, had Hopkins made his first kick, Washington wouldn’t have had to go for two. They could’ve just kicked two extra points, been down three, and they could’ve gone for a game-tying field goal when their touchdown drive stalled out. Granted, that’s a lot of “ifs”, “ands”, and “buts”, but it just goes to show the ripple effect that missing the extra point had on the game.

Hopkins just missed one kick, so we’re not going to be too hard on him. That said, this was definitely a dud performance for him after all of the excellent clutch outings he had put together during the team’s winning streak.
