Stud No. 2 – S Kamren Curl

Kamren Curl proved me wrong. As of today, he is the best seventh-round pick from the 2020 NFL Draft, and it isn’t particularly close.

In truth, Curl proved me wrong a long time ago. He’s been a solid contributor for the defense since before he took the starting role. But in every game since then, Curl has been rangy, instinctive, and impactful as a tackler across the field. And in Week 14, Curl got the big play to punctuate his strong play.

The Washington Football Team had two defensive touchdowns on Sunday, both of which played a big role in earning Washington the win. The first was notched by Chase Young, and the second was scored by Kamren Curl.

In the second half, the 49ers dropped back to pass, and Nick Mullens quickly read the field, seeing no options. His progression carried him to the flat on the right side of the field, where Kyle Juszczyk (I spelled it right the first time, wow) was waiting in the open field.

Mullens pulled the trigger on Juszczyk (Spelled that one wrong first, full disclosure), but by the time he did, Curl had already identified his intentions, and had already broken on the ball. Curl swooped in front of the flat route, intercepted the ball, and took it 76 yards to the house, with a key block from fellow seventh-round rookie James Smith-Williams.

Ron Rivera has frequently lauded Curl for his versatility on the back end, and on Sunday, he supplemented his strong start with the best play of his young career. By now, it’s clear that Curl has a bright future on the Washington Football Team’s defense, and he might be more than just a rotational contributor.
