Washington Football Team Dud: Antonio Gibson’s injury

Antonio Gibson was in the midst of an excellent rookie season. He was expected to be a key part of Washington’s offensive game plan against the Steelers, but he suffered a toe injury on his second carry of the game. After that, he didn’t return.

It’s unclear what Gibson’s status will be moving forward, but considering that he was immediately designated as doubtful, it doesn’t bode well for him. Perhaps he’ll be able to return quickly, but Washington will definitely play it safe with their young, budding star running back.

In a normal year, not having Gibson on the field at this point in the season would be disappointing, but it wouldn’t be a huge deal. However, this year with Washington still very much in the playoff picture, Gibson’s absence will hurt as they don’t have another back that can replicate what he can do. Sure, McKissic and Barber can play roles, but the team doesn’t have a true three-down back with him out.

The team also doesn’t have a lot of depth at RB, so if Gibson has to miss time, they’ll need to sign another player to provide depth at the position. They can do that by adding a player to the practice squad and there are always good RBs available on the market, but they certainly won’t find another Gibson out there.
