No. 5 – The Reality Is, this week is a test for the coaches more than the players

Against the Giants, several players had poor games. Antonio Gibson had his worst game as a pro. Alex Smith turned the ball over three times. Isaiah Wright muffed another punt. Logan Thomas had several drops. Ultimately, wins and losses are on the players. But several key coaching misses must be corrected this week if there’s any hope of getting a winning streak started.

The Giants were successful with blitzing DBs from the side opposite the running back throughout the game last week. Washington never adjusted their protections to those looks. That’s on the coaches.

The Giants were successful in mitigating Washington’s pass-rush with quick passing and a varied rushing attack. Washington never adjusted their fronts or increased their blitz percentages. That’s on the coaches. The Giants started faster than Washington on both sides of the ball. It didn’t appear to be an energy difference; it looked to be a gameplan difference. That’s on the coaches.

If Washington is going to bounce back this week, the coaches need to be more proactive and aggressive in their approach.

My Prediction: Rivera’s aggressive style will get him in trouble at points, but this week, he’ll trust his instincts, and the team will have a fast start against Detroit. This game feels like a bounce-back week in a lot of ways for a young team that hasn’t quit despite their record. Washington wins 26-24.
