Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers could be the best landing spot for Haskins. Ben Roethlisberger is an overused comparison when talking about young quarterbacks, but Haskins does have a similar skill set to a young Roethlisberger.

Haskins has a big arm coupled with arm talent. He has good size and can move enough to make defenses worry about it. That’s very similar to how Roethlisberger played early in his career, though he is now a different type of quarterback.

In the wake of an elbow injury that cost him most of last season, Roethlisberger has been all about the short passing game in 2020. He is averaging only 6.6 intended air yards per attempt, good for the fourth-fewest among quarterbacks this year. In short, he’s not looking to throw downfield much, which indicates that he may not be as confident in his arm strength as he once was.

With that said, it’s possible that Roethlisberger, 38, may be nearing the end of his career. The Steelers have a couple of younger quarterbacks in the fold, Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs, but Rudolph was only mediocre in relief of Roethlisberger last year and was replaced by Duck Hodges as starter a few times while Dobbs has only thrown 12 career passes and was traded to the Jaguars before returning to the Steelers.

The succession plan for the Steelers is wide-open if Roethlisberger calls it quits. They are a team built to win now, but they also have a lot of young receiver talent that could sustain them for years to come. They could be willing to take a chance on a guy like Haskins at the right price as a result.

Haskins could learn from Roethlisberger the rest of this season and either continue to learn in 2021 if Roethlisberger sticks around or challenge Rudolph for the starting job. Haskins has a higher ceiling than the quarterbacks the Steelers have behind Roethlisberger, so he could be worth a shot for the Steelers.
