New England Patriots

The Patriots are an intriguing option for Haskins. The team has a tendency to buy low on players in free agency and on the trade market and Bill Belichick is always looking to swing a deal. Since 2016, they have made 20 non-draft-day trades which is almost certainly the most in the NFL in that span.

So, from a willingness standpoint, the Patriots fit the bill. And from a needs standpoint, they would certainly fit as well.

The team’s current starting quarterback, Cam Newton, is a free agent after the season and he may not return to the team if he gets a big deal on the market. Besides, Newton has struggled in recent weeks so if he can’t improve, the Patriots may want to move on from him.

That said, aside from Newton, the team doesn’t have much at quarterback. Brian Hoyer was so bad in his start against the Chiefs that Jarrett Stidham leapfrogged him as the backup quarterback.

Stidham, a fourth-round pick in 2019, is generally liked by the New England front office and coaching staff, but in an extremely limited sample size, he hasn’t been good, completing less than 50 percent of his passes and tossing three picks compared to just one touchdown.

Even if the Patriots believe in Stidham, they could use some competition for him and another young quarterback could fit the bill. Haskins still has a high ceiling and it’s possible that Josh McDaniels could coax his upside out of him. Either way, trading for Haskins could potentially work as it may light a fire under Stidham.

Haskins would be a good fit in New England as he could either challenge for the starting job in 2021 if he’s ready or develop behind the scenes with a very good coaching staff. The Patriots may be more sellers than buyers at this trade deadline, a rare occurrence for a team that is regularly among the NFL’s best, but they wouldn’t pass at an opportunity to add young talent if they like Haskins enough.
