Washington Football Team: Risers and fallers following loss to Giants
Stock Up: Riverboat Ron
On Sunday, Ron Rivera showed why he gets the nickname “Riverboat Ron.” In a game that was crucial for morale and staying competitive in a putrid division, Coach Rivera came out guns ablaze. Ron Rivera kept his offense out on the field on multiple occasions on fourth and short, and most of the time it was successful.
One of his biggest rolls of the dice was going for it on the fourth and four after a running-into-the-kicker call on a Tress Way punt. A connection between Kyle Allen and Dontrelle Inman kept the drive alive. It was capped off by a Logan Thomas TD that cut the Giants lead to 13-10 just before half.
However, his absolute biggest “Riverboat Ron” moment was to go for two after the Cam Sims TD to cut the lead to 20-19. The move ultimately failed and thus will receive some criticism.
I love the move, however. At 1-4 desperate for a win, it was a move that will inspire your ball club. The safe move would be to play for OT, but Ron Rivera, like he did all game, believed in his team. Not every coach at 1-4 would do this.
Rivera said it was a move to make his guys “learn how to win” in his postgame presser. The move failed but it was still the right move. Go for the win. You are 1-4 and it isn’t the “good 1-4.” What do you have to lose?
Also, on a side note, Ron Rivera deserves so much praise for his resilience during this year. He could mail it in right now and take a leave of absence for his cancer treatments. No one would blame him. However, in what is quickly becoming a lost year, he is out there making big time decisions and not blinking at all. Huge respect to Coach Rivera. A true leader.
