Positive and Negative No. 3

Positive No. 3

Is Antonio Gibson beginning to turn a corner?  Is he is ready for the breakout season that was expected of this third-round selection?  It’s only four games into his rookie season, but it’s possible that this Memphis Tiger is ready to claw his way into the hearts of coaches and fans alike.

Gibson was solid on Sunday, but just a bit short of spectacular.  That’s not a complaint by any stretch.  If anything, it is more steps in the right direction, and continued improvement from any rookie is certainly a positive.  If he has turned a corner, the rest of the season should be a feast for the eyes.

Gibson caught four passes on five targets for 82 yards on Sunday and added 46 yards rushing with a touchdown.  A very productive day indeed.  For his efforts against the Ravens, Antonio Gibson rates as the highest positive of the week.  Agree or disagree?

Negative No. 3

While we are on the subject of running backs, Sunday’s game against the Ravens was a low mark for this group of players – outside of Antonio Gibson, of course.  J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber combined for five carries and 11 yards.  That kind of production is pitiful at best and more is needed from these two backs.  McKissic lost a fumble late in the first quarter and the Ravens turned it into a touchdown two plays later.

McKissic did contribute seven catches for 40 yards, but we can’t overlook the negatives from this game.  Peyton Barber was worse, much worse.  Three carries for five yards is not a productive day at all.  The Barber 2020 stats line reads as follows:  24 carries for 41 yards.  It’s the kind of production that could lead to being released.  The running backs land on the negative list and let’s hope it is a short stay.
