Overall Outlook

Unless the Washington Football Team is willing to make a move at the receiver position, their group could become a problem in a hurry. They’ve already been decimated by injuries and suspensions and will surely have to consider adding a player with more than three years of NFL experience to the fold.

If I were running the team, my first step would probably be reaching out to a guy like Chris Hogan or Demaryius Thomas to see if they’d come aboard cheap. Either would be a fine stopgap depth option and could be added to compete during training camp. At the very least, either would be a solid pickup and would give the young players an example-setting veteran to follow.

After that, I’d consider trying to add a player on the trade market. Washington shouldn’t get too aggressive in bidding for receivers, but if they can add a quality, young piece that fits their timetable for winning, they should pull the trigger. Dante Pettis should be their top target but if they can’t get a potential starter, adding a very cheap depth option wouldn’t be a bad idea.

But at the end of the day, it seems likely that the team will try to solve the problem mostly internally. They may make one signing or trade, but the team will look for guys like Sims, Kidsy, Johnson, and Wright to step up. Of that group, one player should find success and be a fine option to fill in as a fifth or sixth receiver for the squad.

Washington should probably make a move to bolster the depth at receiver. They simply don’t have enough to get by even if one of their four best roster dark horses do pan out. Getting a veteran would be preferable, but the team won’t sneeze at a capable young receiver, so long as they feel he is enough of an upgrade.

Losing Latimer, the team’s most seasoned pro receiver, isn’t ideal. Even if he was meant merely to be a backup, the team now lacks a veteran presence in that unit. Maybe it won’t matter. Maybe it will. But as it stands, Washington’s receiving corps doesn’t look great and is, at best, top-heavy.
