Redskins UDFA Spotlight: Steven Montez adds upside to already young QB room
How Montez fits with the Redskins
It’s hard to see Montez cracking the team’s 53-man roster. He’s definitely behind Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen in the quarterback room and since both Haskins (23) and Allen (24) are young passers that the team invested in, it’s unlikely that Montez will be able to make the team.
During a normal offseason, perhaps Montez could’ve made a case to make the team. Had he performed well in camp and the preseason, he would’ve had a chance to prove that he has enough upside to be trusted as a third quarterback.
Alas, the preseason is going to be shortened in 2020 if it’s played at all. So, Montez has fewer opportunities to prove himself. Because of this and the fact that the Redskins have other unsettled positions on the roster (left tackle, tight end, linebacker, cornerback wide receiver), they can’t afford to roster a third quarterback.
That said, Montez should be a practice squad shoo-in and should have a chance to run the scout team during his rookie season. That will give him a chance to develop behind the scenes and get important practice reps and maybe make a case to be a backup in the future. You can never have too many quarterback options, so keeping him around is a good idea.
We’ll see what Montez can accomplish once camp opens. But he is certainly an intriguing option for the team and landing him without utilizing a draft pick was a strong move by Kyle Smith, Ron Rivera, and the Washington brain trust.
