Prove-it year: OT Morgan Moses

Morgan Moses was once one of the better right tackles in the NFL. And at the very least, he was an above-average starter. But last season, he struggled immensely as he dealt with injuries.

Moses appeared in all 16 games of the Redskins for the fifth consecutive season. But 2019 was arguably the worst season of his career. Moses committed a whopping 11 penalties while allowing five sacks. This came after he logged 15 penalties and five sacks in 2018.

Moses hasn’t move particularly well the past couple of years and it’s fair to wonder if nagging ankle injuries have taken their respective tolls over the past two seasons. If Moses can’t be as athletic or light-footed as he was earlier in his career, he may continue to struggle with pressure. And if that happens, it will spell the end of his time as a starter.

During the 2021 offseason, the Redskins will be able to part ways with Moses to save $7.75 million against the cap. Given that the ‘Skins will have a boatload of cap space next offseason, they by no means have to do this. But if Moses has issues, it’s an easy out for them and they can target a potential big-money replacement if they want to.

For now, Moses is still penciled in as the starter at right tackle. And his contract isn’t too ridiculous compared to what some other top blockers have gotten recently. But if he can’t cut down on his penalties, he’ll likely be cut in 2021. And if he struggles badly enough, perhaps we’ll see Saahdiq Charles and Cornelius Lucas start as the tackle tandem at some point in 2020.
