No. 1 – Redskins TE Logan Thomas

It seems as though the Redskins’ new coaching staff is higher on free agent acquisition Logan Thomas than the general public, and there’s a general belief that he might have an easy time taking one of the starting spots in 2020.

Now, that isn’t saying a whole lot, as there isn’t a single established No. 1 tight end option on the team. But Thomas has the traits to separate from the pack; he’s 6-foot-6, 250, with 4.61 speed and 35.5-inch vertical explosiveness — very good numbers for a player his size.

A former quarterback convert, Thomas has never logged more than 16 catches in a season at tight end, and he turns 29 years old in July. Despite this, there’s reason to believe that he doesn’t have a whole lot of tread worn off his tires, and the coaching staff hasn’t been shy about expressing excitement around Thomas’ traits and mental background as a quarterback.

It’s not reasonable to expect a big year from Thomas, but the Redskins not drafting a tight end and only signing an undrafted free agent shows that they feel comfortable with the players they’ve brought in to compete. Thomas, in particular, has the versatility and viability up the seam that Scott Turner has been known to crave, and perhaps, were he to earn an increased role, the Redskins’ new No. 82 could find new success late in his career.
