Day 1

Round 1, Pick 2: Ohio State EDGE Chase Young

There have been debates about who the Redskins should prioritize on the defensive side of the ball, with three players being the main subjects: Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons, and Jeffrey Okudah.

All three deserve to be considered, but there are a few distinguishing factors here that give Young the edge. One, in my opinion, he’s the best prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft overall, in terms of composite talent and impact per play. Two, the NFL Draft is more top-heavy and more deep at cornerback, ruling out Okudah by way of value. And three, I think Young’s positional value as an edge rusher outweighs Simmons’ versatility, as enthralling as that quality may be.

There’s just no better combination of security and upside than Young, and with Ryan Kerrigan aging, that position is a moderate need as well. The Redskins are at a stage of their rebuild where they need to value talent above all else, and Young is the top talent in the 2020 NFL Draft.
