Redskins Free Agency: Best and worst moves, scenarios
By Jonathan Eig
Worst Moves
Almost no WR help. The Skins swung and missed at Amari Cooper. He was the one guy they seemed willing to pay for. Sadly, the “free” in free agency means the boy you had your heart set on is free to snub you for your hated rival. So be it. I have no problem with that. Nor do I have a problem with not overpaying for the likes of Robby Anderson or Breshad Perriman. (Rule 19 – never overpay for a WR whose huge breakout year consisted of 36 catches.)
But apparently Bill O’Brien is going all Chip Kelly down in Houston and DeAndre Hopkins was on the block. Arizona snatched up the second-best WR in football for a banged-up RB. We’ve got plenty of banged up RBs. How come the Haskins-Hopkins connection isn’t gearing up for 2020? I am intrigued by Cody Latimer. I’ve seen him make plays for the Giants. Of course, I had also seen Paul Richardson make plays for Seattle.
There were so many H’s. Even if you found the price tag for Hooper, Henry, and Howard too steep, you could have doubled down with Hayden Hurst. But, as of now, the Redskins will be replacing Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis with … Richard Rodgers and Logan Thomas. Thomas has athleticism and astute readers may note that Rodgers’ career trajectory closely parallels that of JD McKissic, who I just got finished praising, but I remain unconvinced.

Who needs a left tackle? We all know the Trent Williams saga must end. The Skins have brought in three offensive linemen so far, none of whom have shown much in the way of starting pedigree thus far. Two are interior linemen. The third, Cornelius Lucas, is built like Ty Nsekhe. Here’s hoping.
The offensive backfield, part 1. Who else is super pumped about replacing Colt and Case with Kyle? Anyone? Anyone? Notice I have not included the fire sale markdown on Quinton Dunbar as a Worst Move. Coach Rivera is making a statement, and Dunbar, though talented, is a fair price to pay for that statement. You don’t want to be here – good-bye. We went 3-13 with you. We can manage 3-13 without you too.
They essentially swapped Dunbar for Kyle Allen. The good news is that this probably means the new regime is committed to giving Haskins a fair shake, which they absolutely should do. The bad news is that after a solid beginning, Allen showed little last year. The fact that this deal got done the same day Brett Hundley re-signed in Arizona makes me wonder if Allen was the backup plan.
The offensive backfield, part 2. Look up “plodder” in the dictionary and see if you don’t find a picture of Peyton Barber. He’s tough and has no serious injury history, so there’s that. But if he ever has to play heavy minutes, that’s a very bad sign.
