Five available free agents who could still be the Redskins biggest signing
By Ian Cummings
No. 1 – Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley
Now, I want to make clear right away that I’m not endorsing this signing. Running backs offer largely replaceable skill sets, and shelling out big money for one is just a way to dig a hole for oneself, in terms of value. Teams are starting to learn, it seems, as Gurley was released from the Rams roster after failing to find a trade suitor.
Of course, Gurley is now no longer tied to the brutal contract that led to his release in Los Angeles, and while he’s still likely to get paid a fair amount by a team who can afford it, the value will be a bit better. If Redskins fans want a splash, this, for better or worse, would qualify.
The Redskins could use a bit more stability at the running back position, as both Derrius Guice and Bryce Love are returning from injury, and recent signing J.D. McKissic seems to be primarily a receiving back. Gurley, if healthy, would provide a composite running back profile, with speed, toughness, athleticism, balance, and receiving ability, as well as the production to back it up.
The Redskins still have the money needed to sign Gurley, and Ron Rivera is on the record saying how valuable versatile weapons like Christian McCaffrey can be (although Gurley doesn’t quite match McCaffrey’s versatility or his durability). Could the Redskins, in an effort to maximize Haskins’ weapons core, sign Gurley and attempt to bring him back to his brightest days? It’s something to think about, at least, as we wait impatiently for the splash.
Update: Todd Gurley has signed with the Atlanta Falcons on a one-year deal.
