CB Bashaud Breeland

The Redskins brought back Kendall Fuller after two years away from the team. Could they do the same with his former Redskins and Chiefs teammate Bashaud Breeland?

Breeland is coming off a solid season with the Kansas City Chiefs that saw him re-emerge as a quality starter on the outside. Breeland teamed up with Fuller and Charvarius Ward to create one of the NFL’s most underrated secondaries and helped carry the Chiefs to a Super Bowl. He totaled 48 tackles, two interceptions, and eight pass defenses on the year.

Now, Breeland is a free agent for the third time in as many years. But he isn’t getting a lot of attention. Guys like Byron Jones, James Bradberry, and Fuller all got the heavy attention off the bat. Breeland, meanwhile, is lurking around much as he did in each of the past two offseasons.

The Redskins have a hole at the No. 2 cornerback spot. Fabian Moreau could end up winning the job and holding it down, but the team needs some competition for him. Breeland would be just that and he would provide the team with quality depth, especially since it seems that Quinton Dunbar wants out of D.C.

And just think, how weird of a story would it be if Dunbar supplanted Breeland as a starter a few years ago only to have Breeland supplant him as a starter this season. Give how many weird things have happened in 2020, it certainly doesn’t sound too far out of the realm of possibility.

There are still a number of corners ahead of Breeland on the free agent market (Logan Ryan, Jimmy Smith, and Mackensie Alexander are a few). But Breeland can play and he just recently turned 28. He should have some solid years ahead of him and if he can be a No. 2 corner, that would be great. The Redskins should consider bringing him back if the price is right.
