Free Safety

Free safety is another position that they should definitely think to upgrade, or at least add depth to. Montae Nicholson has never played a full season during his NFL career and has missed five games of the course of the past two years. This is cause for concern when the depth behind Nicholson consists of Troy Apke and Deshazor Everett.

Last year the Redskins ranked 18th overall in passing yards allowed. The Redskins have already addressed the cornerback position by releasing Josh Norman and signing Kendall Fuller to a long-term deal. The Redskins could use Fuller as a rotational piece in certain schemes at free safety, but he’ll likely stick to slot corner as his primary role.

The Redskins still need to figure out the free safety position to increase the production of the defensive backfield. There are plenty of players to look at when addressing this need.

1. Anthony Harris (vía trade)

According to PFF, Anthony Harris was the top-graded safety last season. But when the Vikings put the franchise tag on Harris, that took him off the market for the Redskins. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Vikings are open to a tag and trade deal for Harris and that they would likely need to receive a mid-to-late round pick to move him. If the Redskins think they can sign Harris to a long term deal, this could be a prime option for them to pursue.

2. Tre Boston

Boston is an obvious candidate to be signed by the Redskins. He has connections with Ron Rivera from his time playing in Carolina and possesses great coverage skills to easily supplement Landon Collins. With the Redskins still having an ample amount of cap space, Boston should be the main contender for the position in Washington.

3. Damarious Randall

Recent reports show that the Redskins have shown interest in signing Randall. Randall would be a viable option to have in this secondary to compete with Nicholson for the starting gig. Randall is also another cover guy that would supplement Collins’ style of play perfectly.

If Randall is a cheaper option, the Redskins could make a move to secure him to a long term deal.
