Anthony Sherman has been one of the better fullbacks in the NFL for a while now. Since being a fifth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2011 NFL Draft, Sherman has been a steady blocker and he has done a lot to help the Kansas City Chiefs find success over the years.

Sherman is one of the best run-blocking fullbacks in the NFL. In past seasons, he has been able to open up big running lanes for his running backs. And when Alex Smith was in Kansas City, he really played a part in ensuring the team’s offense could move the ball on the ground.

Through the air, Sherman also has shown big-play ability throughout the years. He averages 8.4 yards per reception and over the course of the past two years, his average has been up around 11.8 with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. So, he still can make plays as a pass catcher while impacting the running game. And that’s part of the reason why he made the Pro Bowl in 2018.

That said, Sherman’s impact has been felt in Kansas City less this season. But that’s through no fault of his own. With Mahomes on the field, the team hasn’t needed extra blocking out there very often. As a result, Sherman has played fewer than 10 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. So, it seems possible that he’ll be looking for a bigger role on a new team in 2020.

Though Sherman’s role has diminished, he’s still a good blocker. He can still make plays in the passing game. And, he’s a great special teams player (as all fullbacks have to be). The Redskins could try to get him on the cheap at a price between $1 million and $1.5 million to help improve their running game. And he may bite at the opportunity.

These are just a few options for the team and if they want to take the cheaper route, they can always explore adding a fullback in the 2020 NFL Draft or in undrafted free agency. But either way, it seems probable that the team will look to add on in 2020.
