Mike Glennon was once given a contract worth $45 million over three years to be the Chicago Bears starting quarterback. He got all of four starts with the team before 2017 No. 2 overall pick Mitchell Trubisky was thrust into the starting role in place of Glennon.

In his four Chicago starts, Glennon was accurate. He made some plays thanks to his big arm as well. But he struggled with turnovers. He had five interceptions and five fumbles in the four games and that was enough for the Bears to make the move to the bench.

For the past two seasons, Glennon has served as a backup on one-year deals. First, he was with the Arizona Cardinals. Then, he went to the Oakland Raiders. He didn’t play much for either squad, but he completed 21 of 31 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns without turning the ball over. And as evidenced by the one sack he took on those snaps, he has seemingly improved one of his biggest issues. Holding onto the ball too long.

Glennon still has a bit of untapped potential. He turned 30 in December so there’s a chance he could improve a bit in the coming years. But he’s also a veteran that could help teach Haskins a bit about the game of football. And at the very least, he could be a capable injury-replacement starter provided that he has cleaned up his turnover problems.

Of the low-cost backup options, Glennon represents one of the best options as he has a relatively high floor, but he could still improve a bit and reach his ceiling. If the team can’t retain one of their veterans behind Smith, Glennon would be a really nice option for the squad.
