Top five backup quarterbacks for Redskins to target in 2020 free agency
Brett Hundley once was the primary backup to Aaron Rodgers in 2017. That season, Rodgers got hurt and Hundley was thrust into action. The results were not pretty.
In Green Bay, Hundley posted a 3-6 record and completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,836 yards, nine touchdowns… and 12 interceptions. While he also did damage on the ground (270 yards and two touchdowns) his turnover problem was simply too much to overcome.
That said, Hundley has spent two more years in the NFL since that time. And in the one game that he replaced Kyler Murray for extensive action this year, he looked more confident than before. He completed 5 of 11 passes for 49 yards and added 35 more on the ground while generally looking steady and mistake-free against Seattle’s defense. It wasn’t earth-shattering, but it was an encouraging performance from the young, mobile quarterback.
Hundley is still just 26 years old and won’t turn 27 until June. He has time to continue to develop so he could be a backup option with upside for the squad. And with his mobility, the team could even utilize him in some trick play packages if they want to get creative.
It’s also notable that Hundley would likely be cheap. He’s earning a hair under $2 million this year and likely could be had for a similar price. If the Redskins just want some developmental depth with upside behind Haskins and Smith, Hundley could fit the bill.
I like the idea of taking a chance on Hundley. If he doesn’t work out, the team loses very little giving him a shot as the team’s backup or third-string quarterback. If Arizona is willing to let him walk this season, the Redskins should at least explore Hundley as a low risk, solid reward-type signing.
