No. 1 – How will free agency impact Trent Williams’ trade value?

It’s hard to say when Trent Williams might be traded. He wants a market value long-term deal at the age of 32, and while that might scare teams off, he’s also a seven-time Pro Bowler who’s fully healthy, with some theoretical prime years remaining, based on his athletic profile.

If Williams isn’t traded before free agency, then free agency will be big, in terms of moving the needle for Williams’ financial aspirations. This year’s class isn’t great, and yet, there are younger players like Jack Conklin who could earn enough on the open market to set a baseline for Williams in negotiations with other teams. Ideally, teams willing to trade draft capital for Williams will be willing and able to pay what he’s asking for, but sometimes, the little changes can be enough to turn teams away.

Whatever the case, the Williams situation is still in flux, and free agency will provide some updates, even if the conclusion isn’t met in March. It seems as though the Redskins are destined to trade Williams, and every ongoing factor carries weight toward what they get in return.
