Washington Redskins: NFC East Free Agency Targets
NFC East free agents
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have multiple players set to hit free agency. Ronald Darby is one player in particular that the Redskins should look at when free agency opens. The Redskins may need to sign more than one cornerback this offseason with the recent question marks surrounding Quinton Dunbar. Although Ronald Darby may not have the skills to be the top corner in Washington, he could be a player the Redskins sign on a short-term deal to add depth to a top position of need.
Another player that the Redskins should target, if Philadelphia lets him walk, is offensive tackle Jason Peters. According to Pro Football Focus, Jason Peters recorded an 81.8 overall grade in 2019, only allowing three sacks on the season. If Ron Rivera cannot rectify the relationship between Trent Williams and the Washington Redskins, then Jason Peters could be a valuable asset to the offensive line in Washington.
New York Giants
The Giants are the one team in the division that may not offer help to the Redskins in free agency. While they do have key players set to hit the market, they would not fill top positions of need for Washington. The one former Giants player I would watch is offensive tackle Mike Remmers. Remmers, who previously played for the Carolina Panthers under Ron Rivera, could be another to benefit from his relationship to Rivera. With the recent struggles of Morgan Moses and his previous dynamic with Ron Rivera, Remmers may be a possible free agency signing for Washington.
Dallas Cowboys
While Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott are the two top free agents from the Dallas Cowboys, both will most likely be signed or tagged before the start of free agency. Therefore, I would not anticipate them being a part of the Redskins plans going forward. Other than Prescott and Cooper, the top Cowboys free agent that the Redskins should look at is Byron Jones. According to NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal, of the 2020 free agents, Byron Jones comes in at No. 12 on his list. With the potential loss of Quinton Dunbar looming, Byron Jones could provide a replacement as the top cornerback in Washington.
Sean Lee is another former Cowboys player that could help this team on the defensive side of the ball. According to Ian Rapoport, Sean Lee is considering a return to the Dallas Cowboys, but is prepared to test his options in free agency. Although Sean Lee only started 13 games last season, he still manged to produce 86 tackles with four tackles for loss. Last year, that would rank fourth-best on the Redskins defense. Lee would be a good addition to the Redskins linebacker group at the right price.
Switching to the offensive side of the ball, the tight end position is filled with unknowns. Jason Witten is a veteran player Rivera could look at in free agency. Witten is a big-bodied tight end who could bring a reliable pass catching option to the tight end position that the Redskins have been lacking in recent years due to injures. If Rivera does not end up going after his former Carolina tight end Greg Olsen, then Jason Witten could be another veteran tight end to look at.
Once free agency starts, Rivera and company should be on a quick path to signing new faces from around the league. Rivera should consider looking within the division to fill holes whether on offense or defense. If these players are signed, they could be key contributors for the Redskins on their eventual path to the Super Bowl.
