5. player. 54. . ESPN Analyst. Philadelphia Eagles. Louis Riddick

Louis Riddick last worked in the NFL in 2013 as a part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ front office. But he may get a chance to interview for some GM jobs in the future.

There are a few reasons that Riddick’s name will be thrown around in the event that the Redskins search for a GM. First of all, he has been mentioned as a candidate in a couple of GM searches in seasons past, so it’s clear that there is some NFL interest in his services.

Second, Riddick’s time as an NFL scout began with the Redskins. He worked with the team from 2001-2007 as a scout and eventually became the team’s Director of Pro Personnel. He has ties to the organization, so that could make the job slightly more appealing to him.

And finally, the big reason that Riddick may get some consideration: He’s a fan of Dwayne Haskins’ game. And any new staff/front office man would likely have to buy into Haskins as the future of the franchise.

While teams have been willing to give up on quarterbacks rapidly in recent seasons (just see what the Cardinals did with top-10 pick Josh Rosen after one year), the Redskins aren’t going to give up on Haskins. He was drafted as a raw, developmental quarterback and the original plan was to give him the full year to learn on the sidelines. Frankly, he deserves more than a year to prove himself, anyway, and if they gave him up, they’d have to settle for pennies on the dollar.

Dan Snyder wouldn’t like doing that. So, he’ll need someone who believes in Haskins. And that could be Riddick.

Riddick’s analysis on ESPN has been clear-cut and he tends to do well identifying talent. It’s hard to judge exactly how he’d do as a GM, but given the relative success of Mike Mayock (minus the Antonio Brown debacle), there’s no reason to think that Riddick couldn’t make a similarly successful jump. And Redskins fans seem to like him, so off the bat, they would at least trust him.

We’ll see if Riddick does get consideration, but he definitely is a guy the team should call. At the very least, giving him a chance to interview would buy some goodwill with the fans.
