No. 4 – Give opportunities to younger players

The Redskins are in the long game now. With a coaching transition pending, and other front office changes looming in the realm of possibility, there’s no immediate success on the horizon for the Redskins. Instead, they need to focus on how to best position themselves for eventual victory.

There are a number of steps that go into this. It’s a complex process, and one step that is imperative is giving more snaps to younger players, to give them opportunities, as well as give the team the ammunition to make informed decisions about who they want to keep under the next coaching regime.

The Redskins have already started this process on the offensive side of the ball, but now is the time to completely indulge, and make radical day-to-day lineup changes that have no bearing on the long-term future of the franchise. Play Darvin Kidsy and Cam Sims. Play Caleb Wilson at tight end. Timon Parris at left tackle. Wes Martin at right guard, as many have called for, with Brandon Scherff potentially moving on. Geron Christian at right tackle. Shaun Dion Hamilton over Jon Bostic. Jeremy Reaves at safety.

These changes sacrifice familiarity, but at this stage in the season, it’s a worthwhile sacrifice, in order to gain information on players who have the potential to contribute to the foundation of the next coaching era. This way, Washington can be prepared to move forward when the time comes, and make informed decisions on who they want to keep, and continue to groom.
