2. RB Derrius Guice

There was a lot of hype surrounding Derrius Guice when he was selected by the Redskins in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was always viewed as a fringe first-round talent by NFL teams, but he slipped much further than most expected.

Guice ended up being the seventh running back off the board in the ’18 draft. The Redskins traded down and were still able to get him. And on the surface, it looked like a great value pick. So far, the value on the field hasn’t been seen.

Through a season and a half, Guice hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He tore his ACL in the 2018 preseason and played in the season opener in 2019 before going on IR with a meniscus tear. Now, he is going to return. And if he’s healthy, he could show off his running skills.

Guice had good power, balance, and solid top speed during his time at LSU. The Redskins are hoping that will translate to the NFL. They will likely use him in tandem with Adrian Peterson, and they will ensure that he isn’t overworked. But at the same time, they’ll be evaluating him to see if he can be the lead back of the future.

Guice’s performance will certainly be something to watch. And if he has problems, the Redskins may have to rethink their future plans at the running back position. Conversely, if he is healthy and plays up to his talent level, he could solidify that he is the guy and that moving forward, he can be penciled in atop the depth chart.

Either way, Guice is a guy to watch. If he develops, his future could look bright. If not, what previously looked like one of Washington’s strongest positions could be a question mark in the offseason.
