Redskins full NFL first-round mock: Is Chase Young the one?
By Ian Cummings
The Detroit Lions’ decision to trade Quandre Diggs, a versatile defensive chess piece and a locker room leader, was met with a vast wave of confusion, and when the Lions’ secondary struggled after the trade, the negative sentiments expressed by the Lions faithful were only compounded.
In this strange and disappointing saga, however, there is a silver lining. The Lions will have the opportunity to draft a safety with more upside, more versatility, and a similar penchant for vocal leadership in the 2020 NFL Draft. He also has a French last name, as if the match couldn’t be more perfect: LSU defensive back Grant Delpit.
Delpit hasn’t been as dominant this season as he was in his sophomore year, but he still boasts the traits that made the nation fear him: Incredible range, a looming 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame, fearless instincts, and a multi-faceted skill set that gives him the potential to follow in the foot steps of Derwin James.
Delpit might not test as well as James did athletically, but he’s still an elite athlete with a bright future, as long as he goes to a team that can use him correctly. Matt Patricia will be able to be flexible in his usage of Delpit, as the LSU captain can cover in zone, read plays, run stop, and blitz effectively.
