Grading the performance of the Redskins quarterbacks through nine weeks
QB Case Keenum
Keenum played a couple of really good halves at quarterback for the Redskins this season. In the opener against the Eagles, he got the team out to a massive lead before they collapsed down the stretch. And before suffering a concussion against the Vikings on Thursday Night Football, he looked really good as well. Those performances are enough to make him the highest graded of the team’s three quarterbacks.
That said, Keenum’s seven starts at the helm of the Redskins have still been largely disappointing.
While Keenum has played well at times, there have been other moments where he missed receivers deep for potential touchdowns. He had one game against the Bears where he turned the ball over five times. And most importantly, he has only helped lead the Redskins to one win, which came by a single point over the lowly Dolphins.

Keenum’s performance hasn’t been categorically bad. But he has only been average at best this year. And at this point, it’s worth wondering why the coaching staff is keeping him in over Haskins. At 1-8, the Redskins’ season is almost certainly over barring a miracle turnaround. They’re better served to try to develop Haskins with live game reps, especially given the improvement he showed against the Bills.
At the beginning of the season, starting Keenum made a lot of sense for the Redskins. Gruden needed wins to try to save his job, and Keenum represented the best chance he had at earning those. But now that he has proven to be average and somewhat inconsistent, the team should shift their priorities.
Keenum can still be a starter in the NFL in the right circumstances. Or he could take a Ryan Tannehill-type path and sign on as a backup on a good team that may be a different QB away from being more productive. But in Washington, his time has run its course, as he has proven to be merely an average player on this rebuilding team.
