EDGE Ryan Kerrigan

Why the Redskins would trade Kerrigan: Through eight games, Kerrigan is in the midst of the worst season of his career. He has been solid, but he only has 2.0 sacks and hasn’t been his usual dominant self on the edge despite playing with high-level talent on the defensive line.

Kerrigan has played in and started all 136 games of his NFL career. He has never missed one. He’s as durable as they come and for that reason, he may be one of the team’s best trade assets. If they can get enough for him, perhaps they’d consider moving him in hopes of finding a younger replacement to grow with their excellent D-Line.

Who might be interested: The Baltimore Ravens stand out as a team that could target Kerrigan. They don’t have much pass-rushing talent — believe it or not, Pernell McPhee was their starter across from Matt Judon before he suffered an injury — so Kerrigan would be a big upgrade there.

The Indianapolis Colts could use Kerrigan as depth in their 4-3 scheme, as they have an opening behind Jabaal Sheard and Justin Houston with Kemoko Turay on IR. The Rams could also use Kerrigan, and maybe head coach Sean McVay would want to reunite with a player he is familiar with from his time in Washington.

There are several other teams that could have interest, as pass rushing talent is always at a premium in the NFL. It just depends on who might be able to create the space needed to sign Kerrigan.

What Kerrigan could fetch on the open market: This one is harder to figure. Kerrigan is under contract for the rest of 2019 and 2020, though the last year of his contract is non-guaranteed. The Redskins would almost certainly need to get a third-round pick or better to give up Kerrigan, and that seems to be the right value for him, as he is not only a controllable asset, but he is still a solid player.

But if the team can create competition for Kerrigan, much like the Falcons did with Mohamed Sanu, perhaps they could get a second-round pick for him.

Will the Redskins actually trade him? It seems unlikely that the Redskins will move on from such a dependable player like Kerrigan who has been a consummate professional for the franchise. It shouldn’t be ruled out, but the Redskins certainly aren’t going to give him away.
