3. Penalties are still killing the Redskins

One of the big knocks on this previously Jay Gruden-coached team was the sheer number of penalties that they would commit week in and week out. Their lack of discipline often cost them in big spots.

Some were hoping that the team would look a bit different under Bill Callahan. When Callahan took over as the Redskins head coach two weeks ago, he preached accountability and some were hoping that the penalties would evaporate as a result.

So far, that hasn’t been the case.

More from Commanders News

In Sunday’s game, the Redskins continued to have issues with untimely penalties. They committed seven penalties that cost them 47 yards. On a day where yards were tough to come by, that was bad news for the squad.

In particular, the team’s issue with offensive holding has been a problem. That was one of the major things that set back their offense in this game. They weren’t willing to throw much, so when they got behind the chains, they were virtually dead in the water. Had they been avoided the penalties, perhaps they could have sustained more drives than they did.

Whoever ends up coaching the ‘Skins moving forward is going to need to instill discipline into this team. If they don’t, they’ll consistently limit their upside with their critical penalties.
