Option 1: Ray Horton

Ray Horton is in his first season as the defensive backs coach for the Redskins and his first season with the team since serving as an assistant coach from 1994-96. He has a plethora of coaching experience in the NFL, and has also been a player for both the Bengals and Cowboys.

Most recently, Horton has served as a defensive coordinator for the Cardinals (11-12), Browns (13,16), and Titans (14-15). While he does have the desired experience for the coordinator role, would he be the best fit to take over for this team?

So far in the 2019 regular season, the secondary has been a glaring weakness within the team’s defense. In fact, Carson Wentz in Week 1 and Dak Prescott in Week 2 have combined to throw for 582 yards and 6 touchdowns. While these numbers are not solely on the secondary, they have not performed up to expectations thus far.

Horton is known to be a teacher of the game, with a focus on details and fundamentals, so he may be fine running the defense for just the remainder of the 2019 season. However, Jay Gruden may not have faith in him to replace Manusky just yet considering he’s only been with the team since January.
