TE JP Holtz

It seemed possible that the Redskins were going to keep four tight neds to start the season. After all, Jordan Reed was dealing with a concussion and his status for the first game of the season was unclear. So, keeping an extra player around just in case seemed to make sense.

However, that never materialized. The Redskins apparently are confident that Reed will be healthy to start the season. And that’s the reason that they parted ways with JP Holtz.

Holtz had a chance to stick as the fourth tight end after a strong preseason. Holtz worked well as a blocker last preseason and had a shot to make the roster as an H-back who would see time at fullback and tight end. Instead, he spent most of the season on the practice squad.

This preseason, Holtz continued to showcase his blocking skills but also showed upside and the ability to generate yards after the catch. His strength and good hands were on the display, but that wasn’t quite enough to get him on the roster.

The Redskins will probably try to keep Holtz around. He could be a plug-and-play backup in the event that Reed, Vernon Davis, or Jeremy Sprinkle can’t stay healthy. He should make it to the practice squad so he will be stashed there to kick off the season.
