Backup Corner: Jimmy Moreland

This position battle came more into focus ahead of preseason Week 3 because of some injury news. Fabian Moreau is dealing with an ankle sprain, and that may keep him out to start the season. As a result, the backup corner slot became more important.

Throughout the preseason, Moreland has been a ballhawk and playmaker for the Redskins defense. He generated two fumbles and three passes defensed against the Cleveland Browns in the first week and has only continued to build hype in the time since.

Affectionately known as “The People’s Corner,” Moreland is still developing as a player. That explains why he hasn’t always been perfect in coverage — in fact, he was seemingly targeted a fair amount because of some minor deficiencies there — but he should only get better as time goes on. And the splash plays he has created make him an ideal backup for Moreau in the slot and will also give him a chance to play some outside.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was in this battle, but it seems that he’ll be the second backup while Greg Stroman serves more as a special teams option and punt returner. Moreland’s playmaking ability beat the two of them for the top backup job, but that trio should still make the roster.

It will be interesting to see how Moreland can grow throughout the season and whether or not he can earn a starting job for the team moving forward. Josh Norman‘s future beyond this season is tenuous, so perhaps Moreland could make a case to start in the slot with Moreau moving outside if the two young players can put forth solid seasons.
