Roullier’s main competition

Roullier isn’t going to have competition for the starting center position. At this point in time, it would be a major surprise if anyone dethroned him from that.

That said, there will be a solid competition behind Roullier for the right to be his top backup. And at the moment, there a few options that the team could choose.

One is Ross Pierschbacher. The fifth-round rookie from Alabama is an experienced, versatile offensive lineman with excellent intelligence. He could end up emerging as the top backup and could be ready in case Roullier needs to take a snap or two off, even though that didn’t happen at all last season.

Another option is the veteran Tony Bergstrom. The former third-round pick by the Raiders has been on the Redskins for about a year and a half now, and he has provided solid depth on the interior line. Bergstrom would represent the veteran depth option behind Roullier, so he is probably the favorite to be the top backup to him at this point in time.

The dark horse backup center could be Casey Dunn. Last year, Dunn made the team after being a tryout player and spent some time developing on the practice squad. The Auburn product is a solid technician and if he has added some mass and strength, there’s a chance that he could impress enough to earn a chance.

Barring a surprise, Roullier is still going to be the Day 1 starting center. The only way I could see him moving is if one of the center options plays very well and the Ereck Flowers/Wes Martin combo at left guard struggles. If that happens, Roullier could play left guard with one of the center options manning the middle. But at this point, that seems extremely unlikely, especially given that Roullier played mostly at center last season.
