8. player. 50. . Defensive Lineman. Michigan. Rashan Gary

Jacob: Matt Patricia comes from the Patriots coaching tree. He’s also a defensive-minded head coach. In this type of draft, he should look to address the defense and potentially turn his defensive line into a strength.

The Lions did just sign former Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers in free agency, but they could still use another impactful edge/inside player to complete their unit. That could be Rashan Gary. Gary never did a lot at the collegiate level, he had just 9.5 sacks in three years, but his excellent versatility will give him a shot to climb into the top 10.

Gary has played on the interior defensive line but has the athletic ability needed to play the edge as well. He should be able to carve out a role at the next level, and playing with other versatile linemen like Flowers and Da’Shawn Hand should give the Lions a lot of options for how to make their defensive line work.

The Lions have also been rumored to be a potential trade-up location. They may want to move down and acquire more draft capital. So, if a guy like Gary or Ed Oliver falls, expect a team to consider moving up to this juncture to grab someone.

Also, keep an eye on T.J. Hockenson for the Lions pick. The Lions have been rumored to like him, so they could opt to get him and fix their tight end position, which was an issue for them last year.
