Ed Oliver. 12. player. 49. . Defensive Lineman. Houston

Jonah Williams was a contender for this pick, but I ultimately went against the presumption that he’d automatically shift inside in the NFL. Williams was a high-quality tackle in college, so for our purposes, let’s assume the Packers see both him and Cody Ford at the same position in the NFL.

In that case, the Packers have an interesting predicament on their hands. They could still draft an interior lineman, but Garrett Bradbury at No. 12 might be too rich for Brian Gutekunst. Edge rusher isn’t a need anymore, after the Packers signed Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith in free agency, but with two edge rushers who thrive working off of interior pressure, the selection of another defensive tackle becomes a possibility.

And it just so happens that that possibility aligns with the “best player available” philosophy, with Ed Oliver still on the board.

Oliver size (6-foot-1, 290) will turn some away, but the Houston product has unparalleled athleticism on the line. His short-area agility and acceleration from his stance is very impressive, and he has the leverage and power to go along with his athletic traits.

The Packers met with Oliver at the NFL Combine, and if he drops to the No. 12 pick, the Packers have plenty of reason to draft him. Kenny Clark is entering a contract year, and Mike Daniels turns 30 later this year. Adding Oliver to the rotation not only improves the potency of the Packers pass rush immediately, but it also sets them up for sustainable success in the future.
