Redskins make the playoffs, perform poorly

This is the other possibility that would be tough to figure out. The Redskins could sneak into the playoffs with a couple of wins. But, if they play sloppy in those games or get utterly embarrassed in the playoffs, there could still be sweeping changes to the organization.

Many falsely assume that making it to the playoffs guarantees a coach’s job security. While that is often the case, it isn’t always true. Just last season, the Titans fired head coach Mike Mularkey after he led them to a win over the Chiefs and lost against the Patriots. The Titans played well in both games, but the team just wanted to go in a different direction.

That could be something that happens with the ‘Skins if this squad makes the postseason. While Gruden has done some good things, if the team continues to have problems with energy, discipline, and sloppy play throughout the final few weeks, that may be enough to see him and the Redskins go their separate ways. In this circumstance, the team would view the next coach as being the guy to get them over the hump and start winning in the postseason.

There seems to be a split of what fans want when it comes to the postseason. Some don’t want the team to make it because they may not be competitive, as this scenario assumes. Others say that the postseason can’t be taken for granted and that fans should be grateful just to be there, even if the team isn’t a legitimate contender. There really isn’t a right answer to the dilemma, but either way, this situation of making the postseason and struggling is well within the realm of possibility.

Of course, this situation assumes that the Redskins are able to win their final two games and get the help they need to get into the postseason. And from looking at the schedule, that may be easier said than done.
