Redskins make the playoffs, perform well

Nobody is going to pretend that the Redskins, as currently constructed, are a Super Bowl contender. They’re on their fourth starting quarterback for crying out loud! But still, if the team makes the playoffs, they can do a lot to demonstrate that they have the upside to be a contender down the road, whether that’s in 2019 of 2020.

If the Redskins sneak into the playoffs as the sixth seed, they will likely get a matchup with the Chicago Bears. That is, of course, subject to change, but that seems like the most likely path. The Bears are a very hard team to beat with a great defense. But, if the Redskins were to face them and at least show an ability to move the ball and keep it close with their defense, that would go a long way towards ensuring fans that the franchise is moving in the right direction.

One thing that Jay Gruden-led squads have lacked during his tenure is energy, effort, and attention to detail. Those things have been issues at times this year, but if the ‘Skins can go on a mini-run to get to the postseason and show solid all-around ability, that will do a lot to give Gruden some job security. And if they make the postseason and are able to win, that should guarantee that he will be back for another year at the least.

But again, even if the team doesn’t win and they show well, that would be a step in the right direction for the squad. Josh Johnson is the quarterback, and it’s possible — if not, probable — that the offense will struggle against the defenses that are going to occupy the NFC side of the playoff bracket. If they can keep it close with a quality opponent, that will give the team some hope that if healthy, and if they have a starter-worthy quarterback, they could be a serious playoff contender in the near future.

This is a possible, albeit unlikely, scenario. But, it can’t be discounted. The Redskins seem to have some new energy with Johnson at quarterback. So maybe, just maybe, he will be the spark that the team needs to get on the right track and save what many had thought was a sinking ship in recent weeks.
