No. 5 – Redskins must clean up the penalties

This one is simple. If the Redskins have another game filled with penalties, they won’t win. They have shown they aren’t a good enough team to routinely overcome the drive killing penalties that have plagued them so far this season. Jay Gruden routinely talks about it, but they still haven’t cleaned up all the penalties yet. They’ve been the most penalized team in the NFL up to this point, and that is a huge problem because this far in the season, it might not be fixable.

Yes, some of those calls have been questionable, as there is always some grey area when it comes to a hold. But, holding is holding, and there are no excuses. The same thing goes for false starts. Effort penalties are one thing. But it’s the pre-snap penalties that can stall a drive and infuriate a coach at the same time. If the Redskins can find a way to stay on schedule and stay ahead of the chains, that will help Johnson and the rest of the offense. This Jaguars’ defense is too good for the offense to help them out by setting themselves back.
