No. 6 – Reality Is, Jay Gruden hasn’t proven he can keep his guys from playing down to their opponents.

Historically, Gruden’s teams (and most Redskins teams this century) have found ways to play down to their opponents, losing to, or barely beating teams that they ought to have been able to beat handily. I said I’d be watching closely to see if they came out with similar energy as they did against Dallas. I said I’d be watching closely to see if Gruden is aggressive, coaching to beat the Giants and take their will, or if he’s cautious, just coaching not to lose.

I predicted the Redskins would come out flat and give up a big play early, but that their their chemistry and culture would be strong enough to bring them back for their first comeback win of the season. My score prediction? Redskins 28, Giants 24.

Reality Check: The Redskins surprised me, coming out ready to dominate, aggressive from the top down. They won time of possession, the turnover battle, and the game. While there were a few plot twists during the game, it never truly felt particularly close to or in danger of a loss. Jay Gruden has found something in his locker room chemistry that is absolutely working for the Redskins right now.

I liked the decision to kick the 53-yard field goal with just a four-point lead. I liked the decision to take time outs on defense in the first half to give the offense a chance to score in the final minute of the half. Gruden seems to have a strong degree of trust in his quarterback to not turn the ball over, which has led to more time of possession and longer, sustainable drives. I know it’s killing Gruden to have such an anemic passing offense, but he’s going to stick with the formula that has worked so far: Field position, clock management, win the turnover battle. Run the ball.
