2. DL Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne

Again, I’m going with two players here because they can’t really be separated. Allen and Payne both were instrumental in the team’s victory as they were charged with one major task. Stop Ezekiel Elliott.

They did just that.

Payne and Allen helped to clog run lanes early and often. Those two, along with Matt Ioannidis, made it very difficult for Elliott to find any space to run through. Allen also continued to thrive in the pass rush, pushing back the pocket and finding ways to get pressure on Dak Prescott.

It’s clear that having the Alabama duo has been a boon for the Redskins team. For all that complained about the idea of selecting Payne in the first round, it’s clear that he has made an impact on this team (along with the return of Allen). Payne has transformed the run defense and defensive line into the strength of this team, and his chemistry with Allen has been impeccable. The duo should continue to be very important to the Redskins success moving forward.

By the end of the day, Elliott had only 33 yards on the ground on 15 carries. It was one of the worst games of his career, and easily his worst performance against Washington. It’s clear that the Redskins accomplished this key to the game, and Payne and Allen played a big part in that. They deserve praise for locking up one of the best workhorse backs in the NFL.
