No. 3 Redskins must make Cam Newton one dimensional

Cam Newton has had plenty of success in the past against the Redskins in the Jay Gruden era. In fact, he is undefeated against Washington. Greg Manusky was brought in to make this defense tougher up front and they must be this game as Newton is a physical presence in the pocket.

Standing 6-5 and weighing almost 250 pounds, Newton is a different type of quarterback than what they saw last week in Drew Brees. Newton is tough to bring down and routinely makes plays with his legs.

Through the first four games, Newton has been up-and-down in the passing game but has remained a strong runner throughout with 165 yards on 36 attempts. This adds an element to his game that a lot of quarterbacks don’t have and the defense must be prepared for him to run. That includes designed runs, run-pass options, or even when the play breaks down,

Newton can beat a team running the football. This is why they must take this element of his game away and make him beat them with his arm. If they can do that, it will make their defense all the more effective in Week 6.
