Josh Doctson may come into focus in this game. He may also not play, though he seems to be trending in the right direction in that department. If he’s on the field, the Redskins are going to have to rely on him more out of necessity than anything else.

Currently, the ‘Skins receiving corps is dealing with some serious injury issues. Both Jamison Crowder and Paul Richardson were out of practice on Thursday, and that makes their status questionable at best for Sunday’s game. Without them, the receiving corps would be a major issue.

Beyond Doctson, Richardson, and Crowder, the Redskins have some veteran options in Brian Quick, Maurice Harris, and Michael Floyd. None have been particularly productive in recent seasons, and having to rely on them to separate and make plays on the outside could be an issue.

Considering that the weakest part of the Panthers defense is their secondary, it would be a shame for Washington to be unable to exploit that.

For that reason, Doctson is going to be important for the team. He is still a level up from the other receivers on the roster, though he hasn’t played like it so far, and this could really be his chance to prove that he can do something as a starter in the NFL. And if he puts up a dud as the de facto No. 1 receiver in this contest, it will become increasingly clear that he’s not a go-to guy at the NFL level.

Few have more riding on this game than Doctson. If he’s on the field, a lot will be expected of him. This really could be a great chance for him to produce and he could have his biggest game of the season. Again, that’s not saying much, but winning a role in the offense at this point would be a mini-victory for Doctson in his third season.
